Visiting Willie Bester home was a wonderful experience for the Khayelitsha and Goodwood homes! Willie’s home is a sculptural masterpiece in and of itself with painted metal forms, figures and functional pieces everywhere.

The learners were able to speak to Willie about his background and his struggle during the apartheid years, and most importantly, how he overcame challenges during these years. At the end, the children were inspired to create their own sculptures.

Effects from the visit:

The following week at the art session in Goodwood, the boys decided to make fun works using found boxes and old brushes making sculptures referencing the Willie Bester studio visit. Cable ties are a great help putting things together when impatient little hands can’t wait for glue to dry! Orange Art Project gifted one of the artworks to Willie for his personal collection.
